The First District

Kansas’ First Congressional District stretches across nearly all of western and much of central Kansas, making it one of the largest congressional districts in the nation. Often called the “Big First,” it spans hundreds of miles of farmland, small towns, and regional hubs, anchored by agriculture, energy, manufacturing, and transportation. Communities across the district are deeply rooted in farming and ranching, with generations of families tied to the land and to local institutions like schools, hospitals, cooperatives, and main-street businesses. The vast geography means neighbors are spread far apart, but shared values of hard work, self-reliance, and community responsibility run deep.

Life in the First District is shaped by affordability pressures, access to healthcare, and the need for reliable infrastructure, from roads and bridges to broadband and water systems. Rural hospitals, family farms, and small employers are central to local economies, and when they struggle, entire communities feel the impact. Kansans in the First value leaders who show up, listen, and understand rural realities, not just from a distance but on the ground. Representation here requires a go-everywhere mindset and a commitment to practical solutions that keep rural communities strong, prosperous, and secure for the next generation.
